Architects are on the cusp of a "new era" of building and double glazing is part of this, according to an American expert.A "new era" of building is approaching and double glazing is part of this, according to an American architect.Existing technologies allow energy to be both saved and generated and are being worked into the design of buildings, Lee Grutchfield, architect at TruexCullins in Burlington, Vermont writes in the Burlington Free Press.Mr Grutchfield explains that, in a new development of six houses called South Farm, many energy-saving ideas, technologies and design practices have been used. Double glazing has been adopted along the south side of the development as this admits the sun's warmth but still insulates the building from the cold."Typically the most amount of glazing should be on the south-facing walls, and the least amount on the north," Mr Grutchfield has written.Ben Collins, Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors Northern Ireland's director, recently recommended that those who do not live in new builds should consider installing double-glazing as it makes a "significant contribution" to the energy efficiency of a property.Posted by Lucy Pritchard
